Is there any way to change the color of the blue dots indicating notes to a brighter color...say yellow for those of us who are visually impaired?

Look under Tools menu, Settings... (F7 is the shortcut key)

The fretboard settings are in a different place...
With the fretboard visible, take a look to the right of the fretboard, there is a settings button.. just click it and you'll be able to change the note colors
