As default in ubuntu, timidity works with "freepats"..
you can download a different soundfont and configure it in /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg
For instance, there "fluid-soundfont-gm" could be easy to install since it's at ubuntu repositories.
So you have to install the package:
~$ sudo apt-get install fluid-soundfont-gm
Then open the configuration file ( if you don't have "gedit", use any other text editor ):
~$ sudo gedit /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg
Comment ( add # char ) the line
source /etc/timidity/freepats.cfg
Uncomment ( remove # char ) the line
source /etc/timidity/fluidr3_gm.cfg
Restart timidity, tuxguitar.. and it must change the soundfont.

Go to "Tools -> Preferences", and click on "Sound" section.
What MIDI Port do you have selected ?? and what others do you have available ?
