Adding more than 4 notes in 44 mesure

For some reason I can't add more than 4 notes in a 4/4 measure. For example in Green Days song American Idiot it has eight notes in each measure but it's in 4/4 time. Anyway to do this?

If all the notes you enter are quarter notes then you have to click on the eighth note icon on the toolbar to change them to eighth notes.
