i am very new to tux guitar, i have ubuntu 7.10 and i was playing around with it making some notes and i clicked "play" i saw all the notes light up one by one but i couldn't hear any sound?? i also had it set to clean guitar, but i tried other instruments and still the same thing.

Hi,
What JVM are you using to run the app ??
try: tuxguitar -i
if you don't have a Sun JVM, you will need install a software synthesizer:
sudo apt-get install timidity
then go to tuxguitar sound config "Tools -> Settings : Sound" and select the first timidity port on "Midi Port" option.
