Ubuntu user here
I like the sound coming out of tuxguitar if i set "java synthetizer" in midi port under tools/setting/audio. The sound becomes much worst and scatty with "timidity port #"
But if i put java i cannot use tuxguitar while using other programs to play other music or any sound at all. it tells me "midi system unavailable" in that case.
How to solve?

This is a known problem of Java Sound Api.
It is because it uses OSS as output.
and OSS allways have the problem to open 2 sound devices at same time.
There is a solution for that, but don't work for all people.
you can try it.
it's about "alsa-oss" wrapper.
you can install it, (it's on ubuntu repositories)
and then run tuxguitar with it:
aoss tuxguitar
